aloo ka halwa

About potato halwa

Potatoes are commonly used in Indian kitchens to prepare various dishes, whether it’s a vegetable or a savory snack. But when it comes to making something sweet with potatoes, we often pause and wonder if a sweet made from potatoes can really be delicious. We may worry whether all our time, effort, and ingredients will go to waste. But that’s not the case; before trying potato halwa, I too had the same thoughts.

But when I had my mom’s homemade potato halwa during a fast, I realized that this halwa is not only incredibly tasty but also very easy to make. To prepare potato halwa, ghee, sugar, milk, and dry fruits are used. When it comes to Indian desserts, a wide variety of sweets are made and enjoyed. Halwa, in particular, is made in different variations and flavors, such as atta halwa, which is also known as sheera.

There are many types of halwas such as suji halwa, dal badam halwa, Karachi halwa, lauki halwa, gajar halwa, etc. But when it comes to potato halwa, it is very simple to make, and if you are new to the kitchen, you can definitely try this recipe. Potatoes are rich in vitamin C, B complex, iron, phosphorus, and other nutrients, which help in providing various essential nutrients to the body.

Potato halwa is mainly made during fasting. However, it can also be enjoyed in the winter season because potatoes are heavy to digest, and they help in relieving the constant hunger that we often feel in colder months. To make potato halwa, there is no need for any special kind of potato; you can easily prepare it with the regular potatoes available at home.

Before serving the halwa, it is essential to heat it up, as it is made with ghee. When it cools down, the ghee solidifies, and it may not taste as good. Potatoes can be used to make not only halwa but also many other favorite dishes such as paratha, chips, samosas, French fries, and a variety of other recipes.

Ghee – 100 ml
Cardamom – 2
Saffron – 10-12 strands soaked in milk

Sugar – 125 grams
Dry fruits

How to make potato pudding

To make potato halwa, first add potatoes, salt, and water into a pressure cooker and cook for 4-5 whistles. Turn off the gas flame and let the cooker cool down. Once cooled, peel the potatoes and mash them well using a masher.

Next, take a non-stick pan and heat ghee in it. Once the ghee is hot, add crushed cardamom. Then, add the mashed potatoes to the pan. Cook the potatoes on high heat for 5 minutes. After that, reduce the heat to medium and stir until the mixture turns slightly brown.

Once the halwa starts turning brown, add sugar, saffron strands, and cream. Continue stirring the halwa until it starts releasing ghee. Once the halwa releases ghee, turn off the gas.

Your warm potato halwa, perfect for fasting, is ready to be served.

Tips

To make potato halwa, it is important to boil the potatoes properly. Otherwise, it may take more time to make the halwa.

The taste of the hot and freshly served halwa is truly delightful.

When you add mashed potatoes to hot ghee, initially the potatoes will absorb all the ghee. But as the halwa continues to cook, the ghee will start separating from the potatoes.

If a little salt is added while boiling the potatoes, they won’t crack.
