About coconut barfi

Coconut is rich in protein, minerals, and iron, making it highly beneficial for health. Coconut-based sweets are popular in various regions of India under different names, such as “Khopra Pak” in Gujarat and “Coconut Burfi” in North India. Coconut burfi can be made using either fresh or dried coconut (known as ‘gota’). In this recipe, we’ve used dried coconut grated and mixed with milk, cream, and sugar to create a delicious treat. Typically, coconut burfi is made with condensed milk and mawa as well, but it’s also possible to create a delicious version using simple available ingredients. This burfi can be stored and enjoyed whenever you crave something sweet. This simple coconut burfi is especially made during festivals and celebrations. Given that coconut contains natural properties, the texture and taste of any dish made with it, like chutney, cookies, or sweets, are rich and delightful. Coconut – 150 grams, grated
Milk – 1 liter
Sugar – 150 grams
Ghee – 1 tablespoon
Cream – 3-4 tablespoons / Mawa (khoya) – 100 grams

How to make coconut barfi

To make coconut burfi, first take a non-stick pan. Add the grated coconut to it and roast for 2 minutes. Now, add the milk and mix it well. Wait for it to come to a boil. Once the milk boils, reduce the heat and allow the coconut to absorb the milk. As you can see, the milk has been absorbed well by the coconut. Now, add the sugar and let it cook properly. Once the sugar is cooked, add the cream and mix well. Stir the burfi mixture with a spatula until it’s well combined. Now, add a few drops of pink food color and mix it well. Turn off the gas flame. Transfer the mixture to a greased plate and flatten it. After a while, you’ll notice the burfi has set. Decorate it with silver foil and chopped pistachios. Use a knife to cut the burfi into your desired shapes.

How to make instant  coconut barfi

To make instant coconut burfi, you don’t need many ingredients. For this, mix condensed milk with grated coconut. Stir it well. Then transfer the mixture to a greased plate and press it down properly. Let it sit for a while. After that, decorate it with silver foil and chopped pistachios. Use a knife to cut it into small pieces. Enjoy your instant coconut burfi.

Tips

Yes, grated coconut can also be roasted in ghee for making coconut burfi. In this recipe, we didn’t use ghee for roasting.

For making coconut burfi, you can use coconut burra, fresh coconut, or even whole coconut. Each will give a slightly different texture and flavor to the burfi, but all will work well for the recipe.

FAQ

Is it necessary to use food color in burfi?

No, using food color in coconut burfi is completely optional. If you’re using fresh coconut or coconut burra, you can skip the food color. However, if you use grated coconut (gote), the burfi may turn a dull color while cooking, as seen in the photo above. In that case, you can add food color to make the burfi look more vibrant and colorful.

What is the shelf life of burfi?

Ideally, sweets taste best when eaten fresh. However, if you want to store the burfi, you can keep it for 3-4 days. It’s best to store it on the kitchen counter. If you choose to refrigerate it, store it in an airtight container. Keeping it open can cause the burfi to dry out, and the taste may not be as good.
